What is timelessness?
A definition from wiki says…..
While in the popular mind, eternity often simply means existing for an infinite, i.e., limitless, amount of time, many have used it to refer to a timeless existence altogether outside of time. There are a number of arguments for eternity, by which proponents of the concept, principally, Aristotle, purported to prove that matter, motion, and time must have existed eternally.
The “changes” are in a continuous progession.Time can be see as its perception by human consciousness!
What does timelessness mean.. does it mean..”independant of time” “eternal”, “unaffected by time” or “ageless”?
Here’s a philosophical take on the issue :
Time, as is discussed in the mathematical sense, is an attribute of space…which therefore defines the positional co-ordinates of matter. But on a personal level, Time is felt as something very different. Neither do we feel that Time is “space-bound”, nor do we feel it as something “inclusive” inside the universe.
What is our intuitional “feeling” about TIME then..?
a) TIME, in our realms of reality, is independent of space.
If not, we would be literally traveling thru’ time every time we travel across the globe to one country or the other. The phenomenon of Jet lag is a good example to drive home this point.
Even though, we may be able to easily align our watches and clocks to the local time of our destination (London for example), our body continues to “live” according to the rhythms of its original environs (India). This means, the body /mind sees no change in time-zone.… In other words, our body is incapable of “experiencing” a time travel in its fullest sense…!
b) Universe exists inside the “matrix” of time.
This “intuition” is a derivative of the first one. The highly successful big bang model has been modified to include the mathematically plausible concept that “Time” began with big-bang and is expanding (or is being stretched along with) with the space “created” inside the expanding Universe.
Since general relativity ascertains the “inseparability” of Time from Space, you can’t argue for a cyclical universe where the universe first bangs off, expands for some time and finally crunches down on itself and so on- everything going along a totally independent “Time-direction”
Hawking circumvents this problem by invoking the all-the-more befuddling concept of “IMAGINARY TIME”. He says that Imaginary time does away with the uncomfortable notion of a “beginning of space-time”…
As is obvious, this exercise of Hawking is an ad hoc mathematical trapeze trick that has no base on reality or at least what we perceive as reality..!
To brief it up,
whatever the mathematical models tell us about space and time, our body/mind can comprehend Time only as an aetheral flow of “change” totally independent of the matter, energy or space or anything around us, for that matter
And I do believe personally that our physics will outgrow the constraints of “Relativity” to comprehend TIME….in due time…
